What this project is about
Understanding the brain is essential and, without a doubt, fascinating. But while the science of the brain affects everyone, the language of that science remains predominantly English. Still, even by the most generous estimates, only about 23% of the world’s population speaks English (including both native and non-native speakers).
Through this project, we aim to address the 77%.
Of course, translating scientific content is challenging. Most translation projects stall or never really take off. But every movement has to start somewhere, and this is where ours begins. We want to make Neurofrontiers accessible in as many languages as possible.
For that, we need your help. So we’re inviting the global student community to bring neuroscience into their languages.
Who can participate
Participation is open to students passionate about science communication and multilingual outreach, and who speak fluently at least one other language besides English.
How to choose an article
Translators
Start by looking around the website. If you see something that caught your eye, first email us at [email protected] and let us know which article you’re interested in translating, along with your target language. Articles are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, so don’t start translating before you get confirmation from us.
Editors
If you’d like to get involved, but a full translation is too much, you can help out by editing translations that have already been published. Have a look at what articles have been translated in your language of interest (found in the drop-down menu under “The brain across languages”), pick your favorite, and get in touch with us via email. As for translators, don’t start before you get confirmation from us.
For both
More detailed guidelines will be sent by email after your article request is approved. Depending on availability, we may also invite you to a short video call to say hi and talk about the project.
Recognition
Every contributor will be credited on their translated post and featured on our “Project contributors” page. In addition, you will receive a personalized PDF certificate and optionally, a short bio and/or link to your profile or socials.
Guidelines & Legal Terms
Translations and edits must be your own work. That means you may use tools to assist you, but submitting unedited machine translations, including AI-generated ones, is not allowed (yes, we can tell).
By participating, you grant Neurofrontiers a royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual license to publish, edit, and share your translation/edited work worldwide. We may make minor edits for formatting or style, but we won’t alter your message without good reason.
By submitting a translation/edited work, you confirm that:
- you are the original translator of the submitted text;
- you have not used automatic translation tools or AI to generate the content;
- you give Neurofrontiers permission to host and distribute your translation without time or geographic limitations;
- you retain the right to list your contribution in CVs, portfolios, and personal websites.
